Synopsis

According to Catholic teaching, the family is the basic unit of society and the primary place for the
formation of interpersonal relationships, faith, and values. However, current social dynamics bring many tensions, conflicts, and crises into family life, which often exceed the ability of family members to resolve them without outside help. The pastoral practice of priests therefore increasingly encounters the need to accompany families in conflict situations, relationship breakdowns, or the search for reconciliation. One effective tool that can enrich pastoral accompaniment is mediation as a process that promotes dialogue, understanding, and relationship renewal. The aim of this paper is to analyze the importance of family and family relationships from the perspective of the Catholic Church and, at the same time, to point out the potential of mediation as a tool for pastoral accompaniment by priests in resolving conflicts in the family environment. The study is based on a theological-pastoral approach, supplemented by knowledge from the field of mediation and social sciences. Special attention is paid to the possibilities of integrating mediation into pastoral practice, its contribution to the restoration of communication between family members, and the promotion of reconciliation in the spirit of Christian values. The paper also outlines the limits and challenges of using mediation in the context of church pastoral care.
